The Nigerian military have not forgotten the recent announcement by Boko Haram about the sect’s alleged link with the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
Recall that the earlier claimed allegiance with the ISIS caused serious concerns among experts who feared that the Nigerian group might become more powerful and extend their atrocious activities.
Speaking on May 18, Monday, in Abuja a military official made a fresh comment on the issue, Thisday reports.
When asked if there is substantive intelligence to validate the allegiance of Boko Haram to the ISIS, Rear Admiral Gabriel Okoi, the Chief of Defence Intelligence (CDI), said that “its an open secret”.
In the course of the conference called “Refocusing Activities of Nigeria’s Defence Missions to Meet Contemporary Security Challenges”, Okoi also urged the Defence Attache to monitor carefully the claimed allegiance adding that “failure to do that is at their own risk”.
Noting a successful conduct of general elections and a series of counter-terrorism operations by the Nigerian army in the recent period, the official alleged that it demonstrated the improvement of the security situation in the country.
“Let me remind you all that we are at a very unique point in our national political life when for the first time in our democratic history an opposition is taking over the reins of government.
“It is unique and interesting as the international community will no doubt be looking forward to the roles Nigeria will play in the international arena with you as key players.
“This is coming at a time also when the security challenges which necessitated the increased the involvement of the Nigerian Armed Forces in internal security operations has abated.”
In conclusion, he called for enhancement of effort at providing intelligence “that will help in decision making”.
As the Nigerian military continue recording achievements in the fight with insurgents, the Iraqi government forces suffer a setback. According to Vox on Sunday, after a long-lasting battled in the city of Ramadi, ISIS troops prevailed and took control of the city.
The experts never stopped comparing the two groups . Based on the conductedanalysis, both have similar genocidal intentions, similar execution. Both used the tactics of kidnapping children and converting them to Islam and establishing the Islamic caliphate in seized territory
