Rakitic rested for Barcelona's clash with Real Sociedad

The Croatia international is being saved for Tuesday's meeting with Bayern Munich, but Thomas Vermaelen make his long-awaited debut at Camp Nou

Barcelona will be without Ivan Rakitic for Saturday’s clash with Real Sociedad after the midfielder was omitted from their 18-man matchday squad.

The Croatia international will be rested by coach Luis Enique, who has one eye on Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final second leg with Bayern Munich in Germany.

Barca hold a 3-0 lead over Pep Guardiola’s side following their victory at Camp Nou on Wednesday.
Rakitic, 27, was withdrawn after 82 minutes in the rout of Bayern, moments after laying on Lionel Messi’s second in a performance that leaves Barca on the verge of the final in Berlin.

Defenders Martin Montoya and Douglas, and goalkeeper Jordi Masip have also been left out of the squad for the visit of Sociedad, along with the injured Jeremy Mathieu.

Thomas Vermaelen has made the squad and is set to make his long-awaited Barcelona debut after being plagued by injury problems ever since his €20 million move from Arsenal last summer.

It’s the first time the Belgian international has been named in a Liga squad, and comes days after he was an unused substitute in the win over Bayern.

Barca come into the weekend two points clear of second-place Real Madrid with three Liga matchdays remaining.

Barcelona squad to take on Real Sociedad:

Goalkeepers: Claudio Bravo & Marc-Andre Ter Stegen

Defenders: Dani Alves, Adriano, Jordi Alba, Gerard Pique, Javier Mascherano, Marc Bartra & Thomas Vermaelen.

Midfielders: Sergio Busquets, Xavi, Andres Iniesta, Rafinha & Sergi Roberto.

Forwards: Lionel Messi, Neymar, Luis Suarez & Pedro.
